Description

The hw40

A Modern Primary Lamp without a Battery Tank!

With up to 40W, the hw40 delivers a lot of light and comes with modern and unique features. It is dimmable from 5W to 40W and has an extremely robust housing for years of daily use. It can be charged via USB-C, using a suitable charger with up to 45W charging power, but smaller power supplies can also be used. Eliminating the need for a dedicated charger reduces luggage and creates redundancies in equipment. A forgotten or defective charger is no longer a problem on longer expeditions or when traveling.

From the Ground Up

The hw40 was developed from the ground up and refined in close cooperation with our test team. The construction was modeled, simulated and optimized down to the last detail in CAD. The result is a compact, mechanically and electronically very robust lamp that is intended to serve even demanding tech divers as a primary lamp. The omission of a battery tank and cable makes the application particularly flexible and reliable – not only for sidemount divers. The hw40 also replaces a tank lamp when cave diving, provided the burn time is sufficient for the planned dive. Here, reliability is not a nice-to-have, but absolutely necessary.

Made in Freiburg and not a Seasonal Product

The hw40 is produced in Germany on modern machining centers and is milled from solid POM and aluminum. All mechanical components are designed by us and manufactured according to our data and specifications. The electronics and software are of course also our own development, the circuit boards are assembled and tested here on site for us. Only brand-name components, sourced from official distributors, are used. This makes us less dependent on certain suppliers and enables us to offer the hw40 over a long product life cycle.

Monitored

The LED is operated in the permissible working range, the temperatures on the LED and on the electronics are monitored. At the 10W and 5W levels, the lamp can also be operated unrestrictedly on the surface; at 20W and 40W, the power is automatically reduced after a few minutes so that no surface of the lamp heats up to >65°C (risk of burns). In the water, even at 30°C and more, the hw40 can of course also be operated at maximum power. LED, batteries and the power electronics are operated far below their maximum load capacity, ensuring a long service life for the components.

Energy Management

The batteries are actively balanced during charging, the charging current remains (temperature-dependent) significantly below the maximum permissible current. Charging is only carried out in the permitted temperature window (0-45°C) in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications for the batteries. Harmful deep discharge is reliably prevented. The hw40 does not switch off spontaneously at any level, but slowly dims down and remains on at a greatly reduced brightness for at least 30 minutes. Enough time to switch to a backup lamp in peace – even in an exceptional situation.

Well Thought-Out Details

The test depth of the hw40 is 300m, an 8mm borosilicate glass, stainless steel threaded bushings for attachment to the Goodman handle and a standard-compliant design of the seals and screw connections guarantee reliable function even in everyday cave diving. The lamp can be opened without tools for charging, the O-rings are easily accessible and can be easily checked and replaced. Two O-rings are used on all sealing levels. In the event of an unlikely pressure increase in the lamp (previous water ingress, thermal runaway of the battery cells), the plastic pins on the front part shear off in a controlled manner and prevent uncontrolled pressure relief.

Goodman Handle

The Goodman handle can be adjusted underwater without tools, an additional eyelet for a bolt snap carabiner (included) is attached to the housing and a pigtail for cave markers or a thumb loop can easily be attached to the base plate. The aluminum bracket, which is closed on both sides, can also be adjusted for very large or very small hands.

USB-C Power Delivery Compatible

The hw40 is the first primary lamp for technical divers that can be charged via USB-C PD. Power supplies with 45W and more are now an inexpensive mass product and the deliberate omission of a dedicated charger only has advantages for the user. The hw40 can be operated with USB-C PD power supplies of the 45W (or more) or 25W class. Charging with simple 10W power supplies (5V/2A) is also possible, but is not recommended due to the long charging time of approx. 12h. The charging connection is a USB-C socket, which is only designed as a sink. The hw40 is not a power bank for charging other devices. With 45W, the hw40 is fully charged in about 2 hours, with a 25W power supply in about 4 hours. Charging time and power are temperature-dependent. It is recommended to charge at room temperature (20°C), the hw40 should not be charged at temperatures >35°C and will otherwise interrupt the charging process. A green LED indicates the charging mode used. The red LED lights up during charging, flashes in the event of errors and goes out as soon as the battery is fully charged. A short guide to these LED signals is printed on the aluminum part.
